Self Destructing Pixel Coffee Table

The name of this interesting coffee table is “This Table Will Self Destruct” and it’s designed by Studio 1a.m. out of Chicago. The table is made of a formed concrete blend and is based on a pixel grid. Each time a new table is produced, one more pixel is removed from the design.
In this way each 18.5″ square table has less pixels and a more intricate shape than the previous one. Each table is therefore unique. So far they have removed 29 pixels- the designers don’t say how many are in the complete design but they will stop producing this limited series of tables when they’ve removed so many pixels that the shape is no longer practical. The 48 lb table costs $980.

Giant Post-It Table

This giant Post-It table from designer Tom Seymour is actually usable for taking notes! The table is made of 5000 sheets of paper glued together so you can doodle right on it. 5000 sheets of paper will take quite a while to go through, even for the most avid of note takers, especially with such a large paper size. This would probably make a great table for kids, although it’s clearly not priced for kids at 700 pounds (available in the UK only).

Trampoline Center Coffee Table by Alberto Bonomi

The Trampoline Coffee Table might be the most fun coffee table ever. Borderline crazy/genius, the table has a 3/4″ walnut veneer plywood outside to hold your drinks with a trampoline in the middle. The designer figured that since you’re not using the middle for drinks, why not bounce around the room with a tramp? The light is also part of the table and it can be moved to any of the three low volt contact points. Because you need to see what your doing to avoid jumping on the trampoline and knocking over your drinks or the light itself. The table costs a mere $4,500.00.

iPod Coffee Table

Here’s an oldie but goodie, it’s an iPod coffee table. The cool thing about this table for me is the earbud feet on it. Although I would probably trip over them every third time I walked past, they still complete the effect. The problem with creating furniture that looks like cutting edge technology gadgets is that very quickly they become outdated. Very quickly. Then again, if you make it look like a device that has classic timeless styling, you’ll never have to worry about your gadget furniture looking outdated. I’m pretty certain this old iPod is not in the realm of timeless design, at least for me.

Super Mario Bros. 3 Pushpin Mosaic Coffee Table

Take a look at this utterly stupendous Super Mario Bros. 3 coffee table. It’s made from a regular coffee table with a cork top attached. Then the craftmaster who made this, inserted countless number of pushpins into the cork:

Directors Chair that Folds Down into a Messenger Bag

This Messenger Bag Director’s Chair has to be one of the coolest portable seating options I’ve ever seen. First off it’s a nice looking director’s chair. It folds up into a small and highly portable shoulder strapped messenger bag for easy transporting. The chair weighs a mere 9 lbs and can support up to 250 lbs of directing booty. It has 2 cupholders and 2 pockets so you’ll never have to get up. Great for concerts, tailgating, camping, and waiting in line overnight for the new iPhone. Costs $129 at Hammacher.

Mickey Mouse Style TV Stand

I can’t imagine that this is an official Disney licensed or approved product but this Mickey Mouse influenced TV stand from Italy’s
Pacini and Cappellini actually looks a lot better than you would think a cartoon mouse based TV stand would. The ears serve as storage for your DVD’s and CD’s while your TV goes where the head would be. It manages to be both kid friendly and modern design at the same time somehow. If you want one, get it now before the House of Mouse comes down with the legal team!

Lounge Chair Made of Recycled Keyboards

The Text-ile (get it? text-ile?) Chair was designed by Dante Bonuccelli for the 2009 UMUL Project (Use More, Use Less) and is made almost entirely of recycled computer keyboards. Supposedly it might add a level of comfort to the chair when the keys depress when sat upon. I’m not sure if I buy into that but the design is pretty slick one way or the other.

Mayan Temple Desk is Ideal for Making your 2012 Plans

Wow! 2012 is coming soon and you better start making some plans. This Mayan Temple Desk is the only Mayan approved writing surface to properly save yourself from the forthcoming end of the world in 2012. Sure, it costs $5000, but you’re not going to need that money after 2012 anyway, so why not go out in style?

Hot Rod Couch

Here’s a hot piece of furniture… Xhibit- pimp my couch! Someone handcrafted a metal hot rod replica complete with working headlights and a leather couch seat. This hot rod couch would fit into any style room- contemporary, modern, country, rustic, college dorm, antique, French chateau, whatever. If you’re an adult and you still sleep in a racecar bed, this is the couch for you buddy.

Hook Up on the Couch: USB Hub Sofas

The USB Sofa is an interesting concept that was created for OFFF Lisbon 2008 – International Festival for the Post Digital Creation Culture. It’s quite simply a series of sofas with cords sticking out that function as USB hubs. Ideal for collaborative working with colleagues or classmates, you can tether yourself to another computer, network or peripheral without being stuck at a desk. There are 7 cords so a septet of folks can share. Of course the couch has to have the USB logo tattooed on the backside. I could something like the USB Sofa being installed in coffeeshops near college campuses and conference rooms in corporate offices.

FUNature is Fun Furniture

FUNature is some of the most fun furniture designs ever. These interesting seating options are made entirely out of ball pit balls (like the kind at your local McDonalds Playland or Ikea or wherever). Designed by Hugh Hayden, these colorful chairs, stools and poofs, would look good in any Punky Brewster wannabe’s room. The only thing more fun would be to actually be in the ball pit.

MacBook Boxes Dresser is Cheap and Expensive

Here’s a super cheap dresser- it’s just made from a few old boxes. Nevermind the fact that what came in those nine boxes costs $20,000. As far as homemade furniture goes, it’s not the prettiest dresser on the block (simmer down Apple fanboys- it’s just boxes), but it looks serviceable. I’m sure you have a spare couple of MacBook Pro boxes just sitting around. I know I probably go through at least one MacBook Pro a month. They’re disposable, right?

The Chair Chair

The Chair/Chair by Eric Ku looks like a relatively normal white chair. But it can be deconstructed to form another type of chair:
The pieces of the chair are actually the letters C-H-A-I-R. That might be the coolest chair I’ve ever seen… conceptually speaking of course. Amazing stuff. I bet someone out there could easily replicate this for themselves on a tiny scale with some cardboard.

Convertible Sofa Turns into a Snooker Table

Want!!! It’s a convertible sofa that also has a built in 6 foot long snooker table. This vintage 1970’s Snooker Sofa was produced by upholsterers Accrington and famous pool and snooker table manufacturers Riley, this couch was an actual limited production piece that was sold in stores in the 70’s. I’m thinking of trading in my own sofa bed for one of these. Let visitors sleep on the air mattress, this is much more useful for me than a spare bed. Cool furniture piece!

If you’re in the UK (or can arrange local pickup in the UK), you can buy it relatively cheaply now, otherwise just browse: Snooker Sofa

Pac-Man Coffee Table

I’m not a big fan of using coasters on my coffee table but if I had a coffee table as cool as this Pac-Man Coffee Table, I’d definitely use coasters. Heck, I’d even use placemats. What’s cool about this DIY project is that anyone with some basic painting skills could do this to their own coffee table at home. Or better yet, buy a cheap coffee table at a garage or tag sale so your significant other doesn’t kick you out of the house for “ruining” your current coffee table. Ideal weekend project for the artistic geek out there.

Keyboard Numbers Chair

Here’s a colorful piece of geek furniture for your living room or media room- it’s a keyboard chair. More of a keypad chair I guess since it only includes the numbers. It’s certainly colorful…and geeky. It looks pretty comfortable, I bet my wide bottom would fit nicely in that contoured seat.

Super Mario Inspired Headboard

Swedish Designer Myrica Bergquist created this Super Mario Headboard that was inspired by a popular video game you might have heard of. (Hint: not Pac-Man.) It’s definitely a bit of a more abstract take on Super Mario but that’s a good thing because a literal interpretation of the game into a headboard wouldn’t look quite so attractive, modern and sophisticated like this headboard does. The headboard is made of acrylic and costs 2700 sek (Swedish kronor) or about $343 at current exchange rates. Which seems pretty reasonably priced to me, except that I’m sure it’s not cheap to ship such a large parcel from Sweden to the U.S.

Franklin Chair Stepladder

They say that Benjamin Franklin either invented/designed or discovered this folding chair stepladder. When it’s set up as a chair, the
Franklin Chair looks like a simply styled wooden chair. But flip it open and it reveals an ultra-handy stepladder:
Most other stepladders you see are designed as a stepladders first and chairs second. They are typically not comfortable to sit on or they simply fold up so they can be hidden out of the way and are not made to be sat on at all. Not so with the Franklin Chair, it’s made to be shown off, sat in and it’s a very functional stepstool. It’s $149.95 and comes in white, black, or oak.

Ryan Sorrell’s Clamped Table

I really like the innovative design of the Clamped Table from designer Ryan Sorrell. It’s actually quite simple- just table legs with an integrated clamp. The legs allow you to insert virtually any size or thickness board to create an instant table.

The Clamped Table is ideal for situations where you need a temporary table that can be stashed away quickly and easily taking up little space when stored. It’s almost like a folding table but with more flexibility since it’s not constrained to a single tabletop size or shape.
